New Equity Advisor – Professor Monica Daley

professor daley
Dear Colleagues, After a school-wide search and evaluation process, I am delighted to announce that Monica Daley, Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, will be appointed to the position of Equity Advisor for the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences, effective September 1, 2022. Professor Daley will assume the position currently held by Professor Aimee Edinger whom we are grateful to for serving and providing excellent leadership in this role over the last seven years. As Equity Advisor, Professor Daley will work in collaboration with the dean, associate deans, chairs and faculty on a variety of issues involving equity and diversity within the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences such as participating in the recruitment process and organizing faculty peer advising. She will also serve on the ADVANCE Program Advising Committee (APAC). The APAC monitors and assesses UC Irvine policies and progress in developing and maintaining an equitable environment for all UC Irvine faculty. Professor Daley is passionate about improving practices towards equity and inclusion and she strives to incorporate inclusive excellence in her teaching, research, and other professional activities, and has worked to advocate for inclusive excellence through department faculty and committee meetings by raising awareness of issues and highlighting opportunities to re-examine our policies and practices to make them more equitable. At UCI, she serves on the Council for Welfare, Diversity and Academic Freedom to help address institutional DEI issues, and serves on the Dunlop School PROMISE task force to critically examine the undergraduate curriculum with a goal of envisioning transformational change to improve equity and inclusion in the student experience. She has also made DEI an integral part of her research program, including her mentoring approach and the design of research and outreach activities for the new Center for Integrative Movement Sciences. Please join me in congratulating Professor Daley in her appointment to this important position.
Sincerely,
Frank LaFerla, PhD
Dean and Chancellor’s Professor
