Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ARDEI) in EEB

About ARDEI in EEB

Following the 2020 murder of George Floyd and the resurgence of #BlackLivesMatter, EEB established a leadership council to facilitate ARDEI principles and activities throughout the department. The Council promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice for all members and non-members of EEB, especially for historically marginalized, minoritized, or underrepresented folx such as those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color as well as LGBTQ+, persons with disabilities, and the intersections of multiple identities. The Council operates in an advisory capacity to make policy recommendations, and also takes direct actions to eliminate racism by 1) providing a structure for coordinating anti-racist actions; 2) representing the EEB community and ensuring accountability for ARDEI efforts; 3) communicating anti-racist priorities and progress; and 4) regularly assessing the effectiveness ARDEI practices.

The Council is composed of one or more members from each of the department’s constituencies: undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, faculty, staff, and at-large. Members serve one-year terms and are confirmed by an annual vote of the department.

Council meetings are open to all with dates and agendas posted in advance. Minutes from every meeting are posted on the ARDEI website.

Council subcommittees work to accomplish specific goals and responsibilities, leveraging diverse interests and expertise.
Nominees for Council membership are confirmed by the department on an annual basis. Participation in meetings and subcommittees is encouraged for anyone at any time.
